Learning Journal

Since being in the class I have only completed one learning journal. So in this one I will definitely reflect on the things that I have learned or have picked up as important during this Aquinas process. I have learned many things over the past couple of weeks in this class the thing that has affected me the most however is probably Paden. Paden’s interpreting frames in religious work I think is the most important thing that we have covered thus far in the class. The reason I think it is so important is it’s not only something you can apply to future religious learning, but something you can apply to everything in your life. Through Paden’s work I have learned that I have these preconceived lenses in my own life that I apply subconsciously to lectures I see, people, plays, movies, T.V almost everything in my life I view through a lens that I have fabricated through experiences in my life. I think it is interesting and important to try not to have these lenses or frames or at least be aware of them.

I actually haven’t even posted a learning journal since we began our discussions on “Doubt”. My personal feelings on “Doubt” are positive to say the least. I think this play is absolutely brilliant in every way. At the surface we have an intriguing story about a nun and a priest, a nun questioning a priest at a time when she probably not have questioned a priest. The story already is fascinating just with that plot alone. What makes this story so brilliant is the story also is about much more. It is about your own beliefs. It applies in the same way as Paden applies, “Doubt” wants you to have these pre conceived notions or beliefs that are going to change the way you view “Doubt”. The reason this is so great is because Shanley encourages this. Shanley wants you to see this play differently, every person who sees it is going to get something different from it, and in my opinion is the reason he did not apply a solid answer to the end of his play.

I’m way behind in my journalism interview, should probably start working on it soon. I like the assignment because people generally are not that interesting, it helps us try to develop a story of a lesser matter and make it interesting which I think is very important for a journalism class. I think the movie that we have been watching in class “College Days, College Nights” was a really good view of college students. I think the reason that the special appealed to the majority was it’s very good use of using diversity with the students, not only with ethnicities, but with personalities and social classes.

In religious studies we are starting to take a look into the Tibet Buddhism religion. After seeing briefly into their culture and religion I am very interested to learn more because it seems really interesting. I found a lot of things in the movie today regarding the “Tibetan Book of the Dead” very fascinating. Some of the things interesting in this, were their complete non fear of death. Their completely opposite views of the afterlife, and reincarnation. I also thought it was very interesting when they talked about the head starting to bleed when the soul left the body. Anyways Sorry for never posting, peace friends and classmates and profs..
